After a successful year, with 180 teams from 41 countries around the world, CERN announced yesterday the winners of its 2017 Beamline for Schools Competition. The “Charging Cavaliers” team from École secondaire catholique Père-René-de-Galinée in Cambrigde, Canada and the “TCO-ASA” team from Liceo Scientifico Statale "T.C. Onesti" in Fermo, Italy will see their dreams come true and will come to CERN for 10 days in September to perform their experiments. The students will have the chance to use a fully equipped beamline, in the same way that scientists conduct research at the Large Hadron Collider and other CERN facilities.

Additional prizes are also waiting the shortlisted teams who will each receive a Cosmic-Pi detector for their school that will allow them to detect cosmic-ray particles coming from outer space.

So far, almost 7,000 students globally have embarked into this unique scientific journey, testing their skills and knowledge with the ultimate goal to experience what it means to do real research in one of the biggest scientific laboratories in the world.

All this was made possible with the valuable support received in 2017 by the Arconic Foundation, with additional contributions by the Motorola Solutions Foundation, as well as from National Instruments.
