SAVE A LIFE - CPLI Campaign

Have you ever lost someone or something important in your life? Now imagine losing everything you have: your house, maybe your friends and family, everything you have built. In some communities, powerful and unexpected natural events such as earthquakes and tsunamis can wipe everything away from your life in a second.

To try and alleviate this pain, CERN is developing the Compact Precision Laser Inclinometer (CPLI), an extremely sophisticated early-warning system for seismic events, which will completely change civil protection strategies to safeguard people and reduce direct losses from such calamities.

We can’t go back in time, but with your support today, we could help change the future of thousands of people living in communities at risk.

The current CPLI prototype is large, expensive, and it is not capable of online monitoring processing. With external support from donors, the CPLI technology will:

• be improved in terms of size, cost, reliability and availability, allowing a wider deployment, in remote places and in underdeveloped areas. CERN is committed to providing it freely worldwide to help all communities in need.
• be paired with increased processing power and software, allowing for online measurements and data processing with artificial intelligence techniques, a vital tool for early-alert systems.

The Compact Precision Laser Inclinometer is the first technology to be selected under the CERN Technology Impact Fund.

The CERN Technology Impact Fund is a new framework to support CERN technologies with a strong potential to address existing global societal issues, as identified by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs).
