Science Gateway

“This will be a place where people meet: Kids, Students, Adults, Teachers and Scientists, everybody attracted by the exploration of the universe, from the infinitely vast to the infinitely small. It is a bridge, in both a metaphorical and a real sense. This building is fed by the energy of the sun, landed in the middle of a newly grown forest.”

Renzo Piano, chief architect of the project

A bridge to CERN

Education is one of the pillars of CERN’s mission. In 2017, CERN’s Director-General, Fabiola Gianotti, laid out a vision for a one-of-a-kind outreach centre that would expand CERN’s already extensive range of education and outreach programmes.

Designed by the world-renowned agency Renzo Piano Building Workshop, in collaboration with Brodbeck Roulet Architectes Associés, the Science Gateway has welcomed approximately 750,000 visitors after two years of operation, immersing them in the discoveries, science, and technologies of CERN.

The CERN Campus now comprises Science Gateway and the Globe of Science and Innovation, which was donated by the Swiss Confederation in 2004. Since then, it has played a central role in achieving greater public engagement and today in collaboration with Science Gateway it will keep offering numerous, fascinating public events and activities happening all year round.
